Welcome to E404: British literature
Throughout the semester, we will explore various British literary works and discuss the history of the people, the language, and the literature. The focus of this class is in preparing you for college, so you will be required to analyze and write about much of the literature.

Major Materials Covered:
  • Anglo-Saxon Era
    • Beowulf
    • “The Seafarer”
    • Exeter Book Riddles
    • “The Rune Poem”
  • Middle Ages/Medieval Period
    • Arthurian legends
    • Ballads
    • The Canterbury Tales
  • The Renaissance
    • Pastoral Poems
    • Sonnets
    • Macbeth
Assignments will include, but are not limited to:
  • Comparison charts
  • Summaries
  • Worksheets
  • Papers
  • Presentations
  • Web searches
  • Illustrations
Once again, this is a college preparatory course, which means that you will be expected to complete more complex, analytical, college-level tasks. Obviously, I will guide you through these tasks. However, you will need to do some outside work of your own. There is at least one major assignment (i.e. paper/presentation) per unit. This is a fast-paced, in-depth course. I will give you a calendar at the start of every unit to help you keep up. Please see me if you need additional help.

Course Expectations

Here is what I expect from you this semester:
  • LATE WORK:
    • I adhere to the departmental policy that no major paper assignment will be accepted late. Smaller assignments may be turned in one day late for half credit (this means grammar work, etc.)

  • ATTENDANCE:
    • I expect attendance to be a priority for you. In the past, students who have repeatedly missed class, even for legitimate reasons such as prom planning, have fallen behind and have sometimes become unable to catch up. IF YOU DO NOT PASS THIS CLASS, YOU CANNOT GRADUATE. Remember, if you are absent for more than 6 days, you must take the final exam.

  • ABSENCES:
    • If you are absent, you must see me outside of class to discuss what you missed. If you are absent, any missed handouts or assignments will be placed on the absentee folder. It is your responsibility to check this when your return. If you are absent on a major assignment due date, you MUST turn in the assignment by the end of the day! Have someone drop it off; e-mail it to me, etc. It must be in on the due date to receive credit. No major assignments will be accepted late! For all other assignments, you must turn them in within one day of your return in order to receive credit. If you are absent for more than two days after the due date, you must e-mail the assignment or have someone deliver it to the school for you.

  • PLAGIARISM:
    • Remember that plagiarism is cause for immediate failure. The strictest penalties will be enforced. Plagiarism includes passing off another writer’s work as your own (be it a student or a professional), and failing to correctly document citations and paraphrases in your own work.

  • EXTRA CREDIT:
    • I do not believe in giving extra credit to individuals who can’t even handle the regular work load. If, however, you have turned in all of your work and are still in need of a little grade boost, here are some options for you:
      • Save your unused hall passes and turn them in at the end of the quarter. (You get 4 per quarter.)
      • When not required, visit the ERC or ALC for additional help on assignments. (You must get a pass from me first and have the teacher sign off on it when you leave.)
      • Write an article for the Cutlass. Since we will be focusing heavily on writing in this class, it wouldn’t hurt to get a little extra practice.
